Gunupudi Someswara Swamy

Temple History

Bhimavaram is famous for the Gunupudi Someswara (Somarama) temple, which is considered to be one of the holy Pancharamas built during the 3rd century A.D. located in Bhimavaram, West Godavari District of Andhra Pradesh. Shiva here is known as Someswara Janardhana Swamy. The consort of Lord Someswara is Sri Rajarajeswari Ammavaru. The Sivalinga at this place is installed and established by Lord Chandra (Moon) and worshipped first here. The face of the Shivalingam in this temple is called Sadyotathamukha Swaroopam. Unlike in other Pancharamas here the Shivalingam is small. Another unique feature here, is that the temple of Goddess Annapurna ((the wife of Lord Shiva, goddess of poor feeder) was built on top of the Shiva temple, something that cannot be seen anywhere in the country. Surprisingly, the Goddess has the sacred thread around her neck and a baby near her feet. Inside the temple the other shrines are Lord Anjaneya Swamy, Kumara Swamy, Navagraha, Sun, Ganesha can also be seen.

In front of the temple there is a Pushkarini pond called Somagundam or Chandrakundam. It is fully covered with lotus flowers. There is a big Gopuram as the entrance of temple.

It is believed that the Shivalingam colour will change during full moon (Pournami) and Amavasya days. On Amavasya day Shivalingam colour will be in black-brown and on Full Moon day in white.

Maha Shivaratri and Sarannavarathri are the main festivals celebrated at this temple. An Other Pancharama Kshetra 'Ksheerarama' is located at Palakollu just 20Kms away.
