Temple History

There are two Five faced Hanuman statues in this temple, The bigger one is recently installed and the smaller statue inside the temple is the older one.

The small Hanuman deity inside the temple is fully covered with senthooram (A saffron colored powder). This statue was brought from Dhanushkodi after the 1964 cyclone , The Ram,lakshman, sita idols in this temple were also brought from Dhanushkoti after the cyclone.

There are some floating stones in this temple, This stones weigh a lot but amazingly they float in the water. It is said by the priests that this stones are part of Ram sethu (The bridge built by lord Ram across the sea to reach Sri Lanka).


Additional Information

According to the legend, when Ahiravana a great demon and brother of Ravana , took unconscious Lord Rama and His brother Laxmana to Patal Lok and hid them .Hanuman went in search of them and came to know that demon Ahiravana can only be killed if lamps which were put in five different directions are extinguished simultaneously .So Hanuman became the 5 gods in different directions, named 1-Hanuman 2- Hayagreeva 3-Narsimha 4-Garuda 5-Varahswami and extinguished all the five lamps simultaneously and then Ahiravan was killed and Lord Rama and Laxmana were saved from his clutches. This five faced statue signifies the face of those five Gods in one God Hanuman.

From Madurai International Airport, Panch Mukhi Hanuman Temple is 175 Km, Rameshwaram station 1.1 Km and Rameswaram Bus Stand 950 m. City buses are available from Station and bus stand. Autos and taxis are other available options.
