Temple History

The temple of Lord Karthikeya on the hills inside Solai jungle. One of the six important temples dedicated to Lord Muruga or Karthikeya. It is said that the Azhagar Kovil was the actual temple for the main deity of the temple, and the deity was later shifted or relocated to Pazhamudircholai during Thirumalai Nayak's rule in Madurai.


Additional Information

There is a famous legend associated with the temple - it is said that Avvaiyar, a famous tamil poet and a Muruga Bakthai(Muruga Devotee), came here when her knowledge was put to test by Lord Muruga, taking the form of a small boy. It is firmly believed that this episode took place at a tree near the temple and the tree is worshipped even today.
The Lord here gives darshan with His two divine consorts, Valli and Devayanai representing the Iccha and Kriya Shakti with the gnana shakti Velayudam on His hand.
As Arunagirinathar’s song mentions, the Lord answers the prayers of His devotees and removes their grief and fulfills their wants.
People pray to Lord Murugan here for wedding, child and academic boons.

From Madurai International Airport the temple is around 42 km, 25 km from Madurai Junction station and 20 km from Mattuthavani Integrated Bus Terminus.

One can reach Pazhamudircholai by car, van, two-wheeler or bus. From Madurai one can catch the bus on route number 44 to reach it. There is a bus shuttle every 20 minutes from the foot of the hill to the Temple. It takes approximately 15 minutes (3.4 km) to reach the temple. Two wheelers must pay Rs. 15 for entry. Devotees are recommended to keep all valuables safely locked away because of the constant presence of marauding monkeys.
