Temple History

The name Khammam has been derived from the name of a local hill by the name Stambhadri that is home to an ancient temple of Narasimha Swamy and also believed to have been in existence since Treta Yuga. The name of the town is Stambhadri, later reportedly became Kambhadri, Kambham mettu, and finally Khammam, which is now the district headquarters. The town is located close to the river Munneru a tributary of the Krishna River.

As per sthala puranam of this temple, located at khammam town with historical background and importance , well known as a great pilgrimage centre, hubbling with devoties, on all days that while the great seer' (Rishi) "Moudgalya Maha muni" was doing penance, along with disciples, on the "hill" in "threthayugam", then lord appiered on being prayed to be on "Hill" along with "His" counsort, "Lakshmi Devi", accordingly Lord stayed there facing south in the cave. As the Lord had come out from "sthambha" (piller), this place is known with name "sthambhadri", and in due course of time it came to be known as "khammammettu" and know "khammam" in usage. Prathapa rudhra, who ruled this area in 16th centurey, had "darshanam" of the "lord" and built this temple. Ever since all the pujas are being done according to "Vaikhanasa Aagama Sastra". Populerly known as granting and showering booms on devotees, special poojaas are performed by showering "Panakaabhishekam" on every day. Sri Sthambhadri Lakshmi Nrusimha Swami temple on Hill at Khammam City is flourishing day by day for all to see.

The city of Khammam is well connected to other parts of the state as well as the country by roads and trains.
The state government runs many buses between Khammam and other cities. Khammam Bus stand is within a km from the temple.
There are many trains from all over India that halt at Khammam railway station since it lies on the Hyderabad-Vishakhapatnam line. Khammam Railway Station is 2.2 km from the temple. There are many autos and taxis are available from station and bus stand to reach the temple.
