Lord Sri Ram

Temple History

Built in the 14th century the Dichpally Ramalayam is one of the oldest temples in Nizamabad District, Telangana. Dedicated to Lord Sri Rama, the incarnation of Vishnu, the temple is said to have been built by the Kakatiya kings. This temple is also called "Khilla Ramalayam".

The Ramalayam Temple is located on a small hillock in the middle of the village. The Ramalayam has 105 steps which devotees need to scale in order to offer their prayers. Also the temple has a pedestrian subway built around it which acts as a connecting link with the Raghunanda Temple. The entrance to the steps is graced by a decorative gateway which is richly engraved and bearing the Kakatiya style of architecture. Each carving is a strong reminder of the Kakatiya glory. The Ramalayam must have been an unfinished one because it seems the temple did not have idols till the late 1940s, several centuries after it was built ! A local devotee installed marble idols of Rama, Sita, Lakshmana and Hanuman in 1947. The trees around the temple and the fresh breeze make it a very pleasant setting.

This temple is one of the finest examples of stone architecture, built in white and black Basalt stone. It exhibits the excellent craftsmanship through wonderful carvings of goddesses, animals, beautiful pillars and artistic beams of outer walls which attract large number of visitors. There are several carvings of exotic scenes from Kamasutra on the upper side of outer walls. There is a lake towards southern side of the temple that has a broken mandapa in the middle. The temple provides panoramic view of the village and fields around the lake.

The temple is visited by thousands of devotees on the festival Sri Rama Navami, Hanuman Jayanthia and Dasara.
