Peddamma Temple alias Jubilee Hills Peddama gudi is one of the most popular religious temples of Hyderabad located heart of the city Jubilee Hills.
There is no clear evidence about the existence of the temple. But it is considered that the temple is here since about 150 years. Only in the year 1993, it took place in a big way and the Rajagopuram was constructed. Hundreds of people come to this temple and it looks every day like a festival. People believe in "Amma" and the temple is very popular in the twin cities, next to "Ujjaini Mahakali Temple" Secunderabad. The devotees pray to "Amma" as their own mother and believe that she is the saviour. Unlike the utsavams i.e., Bonalu once a year, here is this temple the Bonalu utsavams performed every Sunday.
There are many legends / stories stating the origin of Peddamma Temple. According to one legend, Goddess, after putting an end to the demon, had come to quench her thirst at the well located at this place. A shepherd later spotted an idol of the goddess at the same place where now the temple stands.
According to another legend, a demon named Mahishasur who was the son of demon king Rambha and water buffalo, had dethroned Indra, the king of Heavens. He had the blessings of Lord Brahma that neither man nor can God kill him, owing to which he had became increasingly vindictive. To end his cruelties, upon the request of other Gods and blessings of the holy Trinity- Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva, Goddess Durga came into being. Goddess with great might along with the powers from Trinity and other Gods, killed demon Mahishasura in a fierce battle.
Every Tuesday, Friday and sundae are important. Sundays attract huge crowds.
Bonalu Festival that is celebrated in the month of June-July (Ashada Masam) is celebrated here grandly. Huge crowd of devotees participate on this occasion. Dasara and Diwali festivals also celebrated here. Rathotsavam that is organized on Ratha Saptami is another major festival of Peddamma Gudi Temple.
