Temple History

Sri Lakshmi Chenna Kesava Swamy Temple is situated in Markapuram town of Prakasam district in Andhra Pradesh. The main deity is Sri Maha Vishnu in the divine form of Chennakesava Swamy and is seen with His consort Goddess Sri Mahalakshmi.

Chenna Kesava Swamy temple was established between 1405 -1459 AD, under the rule of Vijayanagar. The temple has marvellous gopurams. The first level of the temple was built during the reign of King Krishnadeva Raya while the rest of the levels were constructed in 1837. The walls of Chenna Kesava Swamy Temple were built in 1425 AD These walls has 18 Inblockedions craved on it. These Inblockedions display the information about the tradition, culture and lifestyle of people during the king Krishnadeva Raya’s reign. The king donated around 355 acres of land to the nearby villages so that the people from these villages can take care of the temple.

An incredible architectural feat that speaks volumes of the expertise of the artisans of the age. Chenna Kesava Swamy Temple is rich in architecture representing the Vijayanagara style.
Chenna Kesava Swamy temple has a huge Galigopuram which stands 135 ft tall. It can be seen from 5 km away. It is an imposing and amazingly magnificent sight. The galigopuram was constructed in such a manner that the sunrays would pass through three holes in the Garudalwar mandir between 6.40 a.m. and 7 a.m. every day for 12 days from December 23. The temple has a 40-pillared Mandapam with the mystic carving of the Lord Sri Krishna, Lord Anjaneya, Lord Vighneswara and Goddess Sri Maha Lakshmi along with their Vahanas. The wonderful Kalyana Mandapam of the temple has 6 musical pillars that create 7 musical notes in its correct "Aaroha" and "Avaroha" when tapped gently with the fingers.

Every year during the month of March and April, there will be a mela for more than 10 days, at that time it is assumed that at least 100,000 people visit the temple.
