Temple History

Maa Bala Sundari Mandir is one of the Shakti Peeta's situated on the Saharanpur-Muzaffarnagar Highway, in the town of Deoband. The main deity of the temple is Goddess Durga. As it is said that Goddess Durga used to reside in the forests that existed here in earlier times. Due to this reason, these forests were known as ‘Devi Van’, which later came to be known as Deoband.

To the east of this town, lies an ancient lake called Devi Kund. According to legend, Devi Durga killed the Maha Asur Durg, at this kund itself. The temple of Bala Sundari also exists near this kund, which was built in the memory of this incident. Interiors of this temple comprise a naked statue of Goddess Durga, along with several ancient inscriptions engraved on its doors and walls. The festival of Chaitra Shukla Chaturdasi is celebrated at this temple, durig which devotees take a dip in the holy water of Devi Kund. Large crowd of devotees participate on this festival.
