Temple History

The Mansa Devi temple happens to be one of the oldest holy places in the town of Haridwar. Dedicated to goddess Mansa Devi, the temple occupies a wonderful position atop the Bilwa Parvat. The temple is mostly popular for having wishes fulfilled. It is said that pilgrims who pray to the goddess with a pure heart can get their desires fulfilled by the blessings of goddess Mansa Devi. Mansadevi is said have born from the mind of Saint Kashyap. She is regarded as the wife of Nag Raja Vasuki.

The Mansa devi temple is among 53 siddha-peetha and also among panch-teertha in Haridwar. One can view whole of the Haridwar city from this temple.

There are twol idols of Mansa devi in the temple. One idol is having three faces and five arms while the other idols has eight arms each carrying a weapon. Mansa Devi is one of the three Shakti peetha in Haridwar. The other two being are Chandi devi and Maya devi. These three temple together make a triangle. It is believed that both Mansa Devi and Chandi devi are two forms of Goddess Parvati and are very close to each other. It is also believed that Mansa Devi originated from Lord Shiva as a shakti.

Devotees who want their wishes to be fulfilled by Mansa tie threads to the branches of a tree located in the temple. Once their wishes are fulfilled, people come back again to the temple to untie the thread from the tree.

Devotees can reach this place via 3 km of trekking. Cable car or rope way is also available to reach the temple.

The rope-way service known as "Mansa Devi Udankhatola" was introduced for the benefit of the pilgrims and it caters to the pilgrims also to the nearby locatedChandi Devi shrine. The rope-way carries the pilgrims from the lower station directly to the Mansa Devi Temple. The total length of the rope-way is 540 metres (1,770 ft) and the height it covers is 178 metres (584 ft).

Haridwar Bus Terminus is 2.9 kms. Haridwar Railway Junction is just 2.1 kms from the temple which is connected to major cities of India. Taxis, autos and private transport is available from the bus terminus and railway stations to reach the temple.

Dehradun Airport is the nearest airport in 40 kms distance from here.
