Temple History

Panchalingeswar temple is one of the most famous tourist places in Odisha. Panchalingeswara Temple is situated on the hilltop of the Eastern Ghats in Panchalingeswar, Nilagiri hill, Balasore district of Odisha. Panchalingeswar temple is situated at 25 km distance from the Balasore city.

This temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The five round natural stone structures called “Shiva Linga”s are worshipped as Panchalingeswara (Pancha means five in Odia). To feel the lingas under the stream of water, one has to lie flat on the rock. A perennial stream, which is the main attraction of the area, regularly washes the Shivalingas as it flows over them. One has to ascend 263 stairs in order to reach the Panchalingeswara temple.

The story behind this temple is that the Shivalingas are said to have been enshrined by Goddess Sita, the wife of Lord Rama during their exile. So from that time these Shiva Lingas are present at this place. Another story is also behind in this place is that the King Banasura also worshipped the Lord Swayambhu Lingas here.

At the time of Maghasatpami a mela is occur here for Lord Shiva that is called Maghamela. It is a very big mela so many people comes to see this mela.
