Temple History

The ancient Sri Balaji Venkateshwara Swamy Devasthanam is situated near Gangapur village in Rebbana mandal of Kumaram Bheem Asifabad district. The main deity of the temple is Lord Balaji. This temple has Lord Shiva and Hanumanji idols installed in the temple complex and temple also known as the second Tirupati. The temple surrounding beautiful forest and a river.

Ancient 425 years old Gangapur Balaji temple is of 13th century. According to locals, from Vishwabramhin family Shri Mummadi Pothaji, a staunch devotee of Lord Venkateshwara Swamy, used to visit Tirumala Tirupathi Devasthanam every year. He regularly performed prayers at the famous shrine. But once when he could not visit the abode because he was growing older and weaker, he was depressed over his inability. So, Lord Balaji appeared in his dream and told him that he can spot him inside a hillock if he drills it.

Accordingly, the devotee managed to make a large size hole to the rocky hillock with the help of a crowbar. Over a period of time, he was able to find the idol of Venkateshwara Swamy. He then worshipped the God by performing special prayers on every full moon day of Maagha masam, the sacred month in the Hindu calendar year.

Jathara Festival:
A three-day-long annual Jathara is the main event held every year in February on Maghashuddha Pournami which attracts the huge crowd of pilgrims from surrounding mandals of Asifabad, Sirpur (T), Bellampalli and Mancherial Assembly constituencies congregate at the holy place and throng the historic temple during the event. Not only from these cities and also devotees from Maharashtra state also participate on this event. Radothsavam is the main attraction of the jathara event. Around one lakh devotees from far-flung areas arrive to the village using different means of transport, mainly bullock carts.

On Maghashuddha Pournami the Tirupati Tirumala Lord Balaji temple remains closed during 3:00 pm to 6:30 pm. Devotees believes that during that time Lord Venkateshwara swamy stays here to bless the devotees.

During the jathara event. Government make arrangements and TSRTC operates special buses from surrounding cities.

Hotels and lodges are available in Asifabad, Sirpur Kagaznagar, Bellampalli and rebbena cities. Devotees get transport facilities from these cities to reach the temple.

Asifabad, Sirpur Kagaznagar and Bellampalli are the nearest cities to this temple which are approx 24 kms from here. TSRTC buses are regularly runs from the Asifabad, Bellampalli & Sirpur Kagaznagar cities. This temple is just 1.5 kms from Gangapur village.

Sirpur Kagaznagar railway station is 23.6 kms which has the good connectivity with all the major cities of India. Asifabad road railway station is in Rebbena town which is just 5 kms from the temple. But passenger trains only stops at this station. Autos are available from the railway station to reach this temple.
