Temple History

Nagarkot Ki Rani is the guardian deity of the south-west corner of ancient Ujjaiyini. This is a place of some archaeological importance. Many popular tales of Vikramaditya and Bhartrihari are associated with this place. The place is associated with the traditions of Natha Cult also.
The tank facing the temple is of Paramar-period. Both the sides of the tank have two small temples. The idol of Kartikeya in one of the temples is assigned to Gupta period. The Temple is situated on the ancient mud Rampart and hence is known as the queen of the city wall i.e. Nagarkot Ki Rani.


Additional Information

This has got the importance as kotri goddess in form of one of the goddess mentioned from among seven in navmatrakaon of Avanti Khand. Banasur’s naked goddess is known as Kotavvi. ‘Kotalgarh that is naked women’s place’, Kotavvi is also worshiped as grandfather and grandmother. Thus Ujjaiyini’s Nagarkot queen is kotavvi grandmother. Its other places are Varanasi, Almora, Kangra and are in Mathura’s Charchika goddess form.

From Devi Ahilya Bai Holkar Airport, Indore the temple is around 61.4 Km and 2.0 Km from Ujjain Junction. From Shaheed Raja Bhau Mahakal Bus Stand,Ujjain it is 1.7 Km. Sharing autos, mini buses and taxis are available from Station and Bus stand. Ujjain darshan bus is also a good option to visit temples in Ujjain
